Pancake Day know as Shrove Tuesday (from 'shrive', meaning 'to confess all sins'), is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. |
As Pancake Day immediately precedes the 40 days of Lenten fasting, it represents an opportunity to eat the delicious foods that are forbidden during the long Lenten season, foods such as butter, flour, eggs, milk, sugar and syrup.
On Pancake Day, villages throughout England hold pancake races, in which participants race to the finish line, all the while tossing and flipping pancakes in a frying pan.
